Protecting your Gut!

For years, I’ve been a firm believer in the use of probiotics. Research over the past two decades has revealed that gut health is critical to overall health, and that an unhealthy gut contributes to a wide range of diseases.  One of the best things we could do for our health is to restore the integrity of the gut barrier and continue to nourish it and protect it against the very things that break down this barrier.

Ear Ache Pain Reliever

My son has a tendency to get ear aches whenever he comes down with a cold, runny or stuff nose.  At one point the doctors had wanted to put tubes in his ears and possibly remove his adenoids.  My husband and I were just not ok with that so I was on a mission to find some relief without the repeated antibiotics…

Prayer of Humility

So I’m sure you can relate to me, having the thought at one point in time to pray for humility… kinda like when you pray for patience.  And it seems that almost always, this prayer is faithfully answered every time.  A few months ago, the Spirit really began making me very aware and sensitive to pride in my life and so began my hesitant prayer that the Lord would keep me humble in my words, my thoughts and actions.  And as most of you know, health and nutrition is one of my passions in life. Well, I took my son to the dentist the other day for his 6 month check-up (mind you he had a cavity at age three despite adult brushing and flossing….it was between the top two front teeth for pete sake!)

Alternative Ways for Treating Disease

I have a friend of a friend who’s 5 year old son was diagnosed with Leukemia several months ago.  She asked me to send her an email with any information I had regarding diet and nutrition when beginning to take on disease from an alternative approach.  She then encouraged me to share it with you…All the suggestions listed in my email are profound for our health, regardless if you are battling a chronic disease or want to help prevent poor health from happening…and for those with small children, now’s the time to start to incorporate healthy eating and food choices into our little ones lives.  It’s a bit radical so take it or leave it…

21 Day Cleanse

It’s official…I’ve been waiting to return from vacation so I could begin my long awaited 21 day cleanse. I thought I’d post it and my journey through it, partly for accountability to the site and readers but also to share what the Lord teaches me through it.  If you want to join me in it, fun, come along!

Constipation

So I’ve had several people over the past few months ask me about constipation.  I have only experienced the discomfort of this once in my life but I remember researching it back then, trying to find alternative therapies to the typical laxative.  So here’s some tips on the topic as well as some therapies I’ve found to work.

The Importance of Leafy Greens

Dark green leafy vegetables are, calorie for calorie, perhaps the most concentrated source of nutrition of any food. They are a rich source of minerals (including iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium) and vitamins, including vitamins K, C, E, and many of the B vitamins. They also provide a variety of phytonutrients including beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which protect our cells from damage and our eyes from age-related problems, among many other effects. Dark green leaves even contain small amounts of Omega-3 fats.  The star vitamin that these leafs are loaded with is Vitamin K, which they are finding it more beneficial than we had once thought.  It helps with bone and heart health, the prevention of diabetes, regulates inflammation and aids in clotting.

Foods to Avoid… Lupus or not!

Now for some posts on health.  Since last October, I’ve taken a break from the extreme way of eating as I embarked on Chinese medicine along side Western medicine treatment.  But now that I’m starting to have more good days than bad, I’m heading back to my research I had done over the past 15 years and trying to sort through the myrid of information. I think since taking a break, confessing the idol that my health had become, I’m able to now look at it from a different perspective.  I know there’s importance to diet and lupus and many other diseases, but I had to give less weight to it.

Supplement Recommendation

I get asked quite often about supplements.  Over the past 16 years, I’ve tried my share of the things on the market, most I have to admit I haven’t seen a lot a results from, at least physically.  I mentioned on an earlier post about being on a vegan diet for about a year, in which I was monitored and under the care of a great doctor out of New Jersey.  His approach to treating illness was from a high nutrient diet standpoint - flood the body with loads and loads of nutrient dense foods, while restricting (severely) the foods that harm.

The Awesome Vitamin D3

This is one of the most misunderstood vitamins, Vitamin D3, also known as the sunshine vitamin. Researchers are finding overwhelming evidence to support that it is so vital in the overall health of our immune systems.  Western medicine doctors are even starting to realize the value and importance of it.  About 5 years ago I had my level tested and I remember it being 55, normal range being 50-80. So of course to the typical doctor, this was right in range and saw no alarm.

Favorite purchase - The Vita-Mix

This past summer, in the middle of my vegan diet experiment for my health, my doctor recommended the Vita-Mix to me.  Many of my foods were to be prepared in a food mill or blender so that I could obtain many more fruits and veggies at a sitting.  I didn’t believe it could do just that until I broke down and bought one.  I know they are a bit pricey but it’s been the best couple hundred dollars we’ve ever spent.
